Mature Aged Carers Program

If you are a parent providing care to your son or daughter with an intellectual or physical disability, then you are also a family Carer. As you get older, the caring role can become increasingly tiring and challenging.

Mature Carers can access up to four weeks respite (such as a short break) per annum. Respite support can help you to re-energise to continue to care for your loved one. Accessing quality, individually tailored care and support for your son or daughter is also essential for your peace of mind.

A parent is also a Carer.

This is a flexible and individually tailored Program, giving Mature Aged Carers a wide choice of respite options. Carers aged 65 to 69 years will have increased assess to respite and support including up to two weeks if the Carer is hospitalised. Carers aged 70+ can access up to four weeks planned respite per annum as well as support in their day to day caring role.

The Mature Aged Carers Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Family, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaCSIA) and the ACT Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services (DHCS) through the Commonwealth State and Territory Disability Agreement (CSTDA).

Respite can include:

  • In home respite support such as personal care, domestic assistance, home maintenance and social support;
  • Residential respite for short breaks from your caring role can include tailored or planned; and
  • Emergency/crisis support.
