Indigenous Carer Program

The Indigenous Carer Program provides supports and services to Indigenous Carers in our community.

The Indigenous Carer Program is coordinated by an Indigenous Case Manager who works with the families to improve quality of services and supports to Indigenous Carers. The Program Case Manager works to provide Indigenous Carers with Culturally appropriate respite to Carers and to refer Carers to Indigenous supports and services that will help them in their caring role.

The program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).

On your request, we can provide you with:

Respite: to give you a break from caring and some time out for yourself

Counselling: to have a confidential chat with someone who can help you through tough times

Information and Advice: to give you practical support and tips

Service Referrals: to culturally appropriate support in your area

Case Management: providing one-on-one family support

Social Support: in general and through our Yarning Trips

Education and Training: to help you with the skills you need to care

Koori Yarning Trips

Each year Carers ACT organises Koori Yarning Trips to give Indigenous Carers a break from their caring role. These trips provide culturally appropriate respite to Carers while at the same time giving the opportunity to have some fun and meet other Indigenous Carers.

This year our Koori Yarning Trips varied from a day trip to Cooma, a 3 day trip to Narooma on the South Coast, a 3 day trip to Bundanoon and various lunches, including a cruise on Lake Burley Griffin.

Each of these trips hold cultural components to welcome Indigenous Carers to other areas around Australia and to see Canberra’s Indigenous Carers welcomed to Country. Cultural components on the Koori Yarning Trips range from singing, dancing, art, history and bush tucker tours.

Koori Support Group

Carers ACT can link you to the Koori Support Group, which meets each month at Boomanulla Oval in Narrabundah and gives Carers the opportunity to enjoy social and recreational activities that give them a break from their caring role. The Koori Support Group promotes Indigenous culture and community awareness.
