INDIGENOUS CARER PROGRAM
The Indigenous Carer Program provides supports and services to Indigenous Carers in our community.
The Indigenous Carer Program is coordinated by an Indigenous Case Manager who works with the families to improve quality of services and supports to Indigenous Carers. The Program Case Manager works to provide Indigenous Carers with culturally appropriate respite to Carers and to refer Carers to Indigenous supports and services that will help them in their caring role..
This program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and ACT Health through the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program.
Koori Yarning Trips
Each year Carers ACT organises Koori Yarning Trips to give Indigenous Carers a break from their caring role. These trips provide culturally appropriate respite to Carers while at the same time giving the opportunity to have some fun and meet other Indigenous Carers.
Last year our Koori Yarning Trips varied from going to Sydney to see Christine Anu in concert to Dubbo Western Plains Zoo, Kangaroo Valley, and the Central West NSW to theYamma Festival in Bourke.
Each of these trips hold cultural components to welcome Indigenous Carers to other areas around Australia that see Canberra's Indigenous Carers welcomed to country. Cultural components on the Koori Yarning Trips range from singing, dancing, art and history.
Koori Carers Support Group
The Koori Carers Support group meets each month at Boomanulla Oval in Narrabundah and gives Carers the opportunity to enjoy social and recreational activities that give them a break from their caring role. The Koori Carers Support Group promotes Indigenous culture and community awareness.
The Korri Support Group is an ideal opportunity to gain social support from other Koori Carers. Guest speakers are invited each month, offering Indigenous Carers the chance to discuss caring issues amongst a friendly and supportive group.
The Koori Support Group also provides you with information about services in the community that will help you in your caring role.
