EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Carers ACT aim to improve the quality of life of Carers through our education and training programs. We offer a range of programs designed to increase the awareness and knowledge of Carers, and to provide them with the information and skills needed to provide effective care and look after their own wellbeing.

Our education and training seminars are interactive and informative and cover a wide range of issues and topics related to the caring role.

Our trainers are professional, knowledgeable and friendly and can cater courses to meet the groups individual needs.

Art Therapy

This three week program will use a range of art activities as a way of exploring our journeys. The goal of the course is not to produce masterpieces but to use art to express our experiences and feelings. Previous artistic experience is not required. Art materials provided.
Please bring an old shirt to protect your clothes.

Yoga and Relaxation

These classes will run for an hour and half and will incorporate hatha yoga and relaxation. Pam and Anne incorporate gentle stretching movements, strengthening postures, balance exercises and relaxation techniques in the eight week course.
Please bring a blanket, a yoga mat and $5.00.

Southside

Learn to Meditate

Meditation is a way of becoming more alive and aware of our moment-to-moment experience. It includes relaxation but is more than that, providing an effective way to bring about change in our lives. Two essential Buddhist meditation practices will be taught: Mindfulness of Breathing, which enhances awareness and peace of mind; and Metta Bhavana which brings about a gentle but positive transformation of our emotional world. Through these complementary practices we can overcome negative feelings and replace them with a confident, kind and other regarding attitude.

Self Directed Meditation

A catch-up for those that have attended the above sessions to assist putting all you have learnt into practice – morning tea provided.

Labyrinth Walk - a walking meditation

Walking meditation and relaxation at Rachum, a beautiful bush property about three quarters of an hour from Canberra. Carers meet at Belconnen and be transported to Rachum together. Lunch is provided. This is a day for you to take care of yourself- take time to be in the present, be with silence, and, if you wish, reflect on any personal issues. Numbers limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. Carers who have not been to Rachum before will be given priority.

Keeping Families Connected

A free five week program is for Carers who support people with a mental illness and/or a substance dependence problem. The course provides information and explores issues connected with: Carer stress; mental illness; listening skills; assertively working with mental health professionals; suicide prevention; drug and alcohol use; and community support services.

Introduction to Computers

This is a course aimed at increasing the skills, confidence and competence of Carers that support a person living with dementia.

WHEN: 10.00 am to 1.00 pm Thursdays 25th February to 25th March 2010 (5 x 3 hour sessions)
WHERE: Capital Careers, Churches Centre, level 3, Benjamin Way, Belconnen.
Light refreshments will be provided.


Learn to manage YOUR money

In partnership with the Smith Family these FREE sessions will show you how set personal and financial goals, plan for household bills, manage debt access and understand your credit file and understand your rights and responsibilities.
